Morphometric Analysis on 2nd Web Space of Hand and Foot in Normal Korean Adults and Children

Abstract

|
Syndactyly is one of most common malformation occuring in the hand and foot. The aim of surgery is to construct a web or commisure and cover any defects on the sides of the fingers. But restoration of the normal web space is very difficult without understanding of normal surface anatomy of the web space. The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental anthropometrical data on the syndactyly operation.
The study was targeting 22 adults (11 males and 11 females) whose age were within the limits 24~35 years old (mean: 25.3 years old) and 20 children (12 males and 8 females) whose age were within limit 4~13 years old (mean: 6.75 years old). We checked the distances in hand between MP joint and PIP joint, MP joint and distal margin of 2nd web, MP joint and proximal margin of 2nd web, the narrowest point of web and dorsal margin of 2nd web, palmar margin of 2nd web and the narrowest point of web on hand. The distance between baseline, which is a line between 1st and 3rd web space, and 2nd web space, base line and 4th web of foot were measured.
As results in hand, distal margin of 2nd web is located in midpoint of 2nd proximal phalanx. And the distance between MP joint and proximal margin of web is half of the distance between MP joint and distal margin of web. Distance between narrowest point of web and dorsal margin of 2nd web is 2 times longer than the distance between palmar margin of 2nd web and narrowest point of web. In web view of hand, upper (dorsal) 2/3 of the web space presents trapezoidal shape, and lower (palmar) 1/3 presents triangular shape. In AP view of foot, distance between baseline and 2nd web space is half of the distance between base line and 4th web.
It is expected that these values will be a useful standard in syndactyly operation.
